Day 61 – More Rain (Cartagena, Colombia)

We decided to stay one more day in Cartagena.  It was a shame that we have not had enough time to explore the old town due to lengthy customs procedures and rainy weather.  We went to see our motorbikes in the morning and pay for one extra day of parking.  Gintaras fixed the left rear turn light that broke off during the unloading from Stahlratte.  We also checked our bike-to-bike communication unit that started misbehaving after the bikes got wet in the rain.  On the way back to the hotel, we bought few mangoes and a papaya on a street market.

Our plan was to take a guided tour of the town right after lunch.  A guy at the tourist information stand pointed us to a very nice restaurant few blocks away from San Pedro Plaza.  The walls of the restaurant were decorated with paintings and some entertaining sketches; the food was simple, but excellent – soup and chicken.

After lunch, we made a quick stop at the Inquisition Museum that housed few replicas of torture instruments in a nice colonial building with inner courtyard.  Unfortunately, all explanations were in Spanish.  Heavy rain started as we were about to leave the museum and so we had to cancel our plans for the guided tour.  We jumped into a cab and went back to the hotel.  Gintaras went to a hairdresser next door to trim his long beard and half an hour later came out looking ten years younger.

It stopped raining in the evening and we went out for a random walk down the wet streets of the old town.  We stopped multiple times at a laundry to pick up our clothes, but the lady kept telling us to come back half an hour later.  It was past 7 pm when we finally got our clothes back and then went straight to a nearby Chinese restaurant for dinner.  The food was good (Chinese tea, wonton soup, sweet and sour pork and steak), the portions were generous, and the restaurant was nicely decorated, but totally empty.  After the big meal, we went back to the hotel to get some rest and get ready for a two-day trip to Medellin tomorrow.
